Current Projects and Initiatives

Demos is proud to support the work of Socodevi, North America's largest agency focused
exclusively on cooperative development internationally. Building on Socodevi's 16 years of work
supporting the nascent cooperative sector in Ukraine, and the more than 70 cooperatives they
have supported over the last decade.
Our team has visited Ukraine, and several Demos partners are providing mentorship to cooperative leaders in the region, ensuring they receive the guidance and support necessary to thrive in a challenging environment.
Demos is actively involved in extending cooperative agriculture export value chains. Our support
includes training programs for cooperative developers, ensuring they have the skills and knowledge needed to foster growth and resilience, with a particular focus on women's cooperative
leaders. Additionally, we are supporting the strategic development of second and third-tier
cooperative associations, which play a crucial role in strengthening the cooperative movement at
regional and national levels.
Our name, Demos, is derived from the root of democracy, reflecting our belief that cooperatives
play a vital role in fostering democratic principles. This mission is particularly significant in the
context of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Our efforts are geared towards creating a cohesive
network of cooperatives that can leverage each other's strengths and resources, thereby
reinforcing democratic values and contributing to sustainable growth and improved quality of
life for their members and communities.

Accelerating Affordable Housing & Social Impact
Demos is working with a major Canadian municipality to address the critical issue of affordable housing and the loss of capacity, knowledge, and available financial tools necessary for such projects due to the lack of new affordable housing development in Canada over the past several decades. Demos is committed to revitalizing this sector by scaling up the capacity of smaller affordable housing developers through innovative and flexible financial instruments. Our approach aims to strategically rebuild and enhance the infrastructure needed to support affordable housing initiatives in a way that is sustainable and impactful.

Collaborating with the municipality and affordable housing stakeholders, Demos is exploring two key initiatives:

-
New, targeted finance and social impact investment instruments that bridge the cash flow gap experienced by smaller developers from project conception to final construction.
-
Examining the feasibility of adapting proven collaborations between the private housing development sector and non-profits in building affordable housing, which would pool resources from private developers, non-profit organizations, and government entities to significantly increase the supply of affordable housing.
